Vivien Lees of the Plastic Surgery Foundation

Vivien Lees has been Consultant Plastic Surgeon surgery since 1997. Her NHS practice is based at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester one of the largest teaching hospitals within the UK, with Honorary appointment to Manchester Childrens Hospital.  Principal clinical interests in private practice include cosmetic surgery and surgery of the hand. She has private rooms and operating privileges at the Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle and the Bridgewater Hospital, Manchester.

Vivien Lees specialises in two of the main areas of plastic surgical practice namely cosmetic surgery and the surgical treatment of all forms of hand and wrist conditions. She also undertakes correction of developmental disorders of the breast.

 

 

 

Specialisation:

Vivien Lees completed her undergraduate training in medicine at Oxford and Cambridge and completed a post-graduate (MD) research thesis at Cambridge University, receiving the best thesis award in Cambridge for that year.  She then went ahead to train in prestigious programmes within the UK and completed her studies with a surgical fellowship in Louisville, USA, at the Kleinert Kutz Institute - one of the highly-acclaimed units in the world for hand surgery.

Vivien Lees has used an extensive experience in the field to train and teach other surgeons both at regional level and nationally.  Positions held include Chairman Specialty Training Committee (STC) for Northwest Plastic Surgery, and Member of the Interface Committees for Hand and Cosmetic Surgery. She has been a longstanding member of British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) Council and has represented that association at other training and research events. As Chairman of the Education and Training Committee for British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH), she led the development of the Postgraduate Diploma in Hand Surgery (BSSH/University of Manchester which is now an accredited qualification in the field and held nationally to be the standard of hand surgical practice in the UK.  She is a recent past examiner for the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination (FRCS Plast.) in Plastic Surgery. Currently she is Chairman of the Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) of the Royal Colleges responsible for training in Plastic Surgery for the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.

As Honorary Reader in the University of Manchester Vivien Lees has undertaken research in the biomechanics of the hand and wrist. She has contributed a large number of publications and presentations nationally and internationally.  She is recent past Co-Editor of the European Journal of Hand Surgery.

  • Special interest in developmental disorders of the breast including asymmetry, tubular breasts, Polands syndrome
  • Hand surgery with specific interest in wrist, nerve, microsurgery and childrens disorders of the hand.
